Rice Harvest

Last week we went down to Shimo Yoshida to help our old friend Yasu and his family harvesting this years rice. Yasu invites friends from all over Japan every year to come and help with planting and harvesting. It is a great chance for many Japanese who have never had an opportunity to actually be involved in rice growing.

This is the first year Yasu used the machine to cut rice. It is a big time saver, but maintenance can be an adventure in itself. Yasu managed to un-jam the machine in a few minutes and keep cutting.

Maria International Kindergarten - Harvest Day!

This year the Eden Farm School grew a field of corn, beans and soba (buckwheat) for the children of Maria International Kindergarten. We had a good crop and only lost a few ears of corn to the deer and wild pigs who come down to visit from the mountains. The kids came over to harvest and were great little workers. Next month we will be processing the soba and the kids will be making dango cakes with the grain.

October Volunteers and Guests

And a big thank you to volunteers Aira, Natsuco and Sian for all of their help keeping our fields tended, the greenhouse watered, the sheep fed and all of our new signs! We really made a lot of progress in the last few months and the girls were one of the most dedicated and motivated teams we have had in a long time. Pictured here with Jake and a Japanese couple who were walking the entire country, pushing their gear on baby carriages!

Solar Cafe Farm veggies

This year we have had a great crop in the fields on Mt Fuji. Pictured here are some cucumbers, mini pear tomatoes, turnips, soy beans, peppers, basil, parsley, arugula and nasturtiums. The weather has turned chilly but the fields are still green and red and yellow with veggies. A big thanks to all of the staff and volunteers who helped make the farm such a success this season. And a big welcome to all of you looking for some good homegrown meals. Come visit!
