Annual Rooftop BBQ

The Earth Embassy’s investment and marketing group met for our annual Autumn BBQ on the roof of JIL-Studio next to the Tokyo 4 Seasons. Our long time advisor Jay Graves flew in from Australia, leaving the Arete anchored in Brisbane Harbor to join us for the weekend gathering. Niel Garscaden, our Tokyo media consultant, also attended. Many thanks to our gracious hosts, Yuriko Kobayashi and Josh Lieberman. Visit this link to see Josh’s cutting edge architectural photography. JIL-Studio

Nagashima Wedding

Nagashima%20wedding%2009.jpg

We had our 4th wedding at the Solar Cafe this weekend. Our old friends Mr and Mrs Nagashima brought over 100 friends and family to our farm for the weekend. Despite a brief squall just as the bride was about to walk the candle lit aisle, the wedding was a beautiful affair and we were honored they chose to have it with us.

The ThursJay crew in Shibuya

Our oldest friend and biggest fan, Jay Graves left his boat the Arete in Australia and came to Tokyo for a few nights to see the gang. Jay has supported the Earth Embassy projects for years and helped bring some of our most important team members on board. thanks for visiting Jay and good sailing. ジニちゃんのメキシコ風誕生日 - Special Mexican Menu

Jeannie wanted to get the gang together for something special on her birthday, so we were flattered when she asked Emiko to do a special vegetarian Mexican lunch spread, Solar Cafe style. The hot fajitas with a spicy mint salsa were the hit of the day. Mike obviously had a little too much hot sauce on his!!
After lunch all went strawberry picking and horseriding.

Our First Baby Grand....

We finally have a piano at the Embassy! Our local friend Kajihara had it sitting at home unplayed for years, so we decided to give it a new home. Jake, Angus, Matt and Andy couldn't lift it, so we had to borrow a crane truck and burn a little diesel fuel, but we got it on the stage. It will be there for the summer and we welcome you all to join us for outdoor concerts, dinner parties, or just a quiet play at sunset...

Rice Harvest

Last week we went down to Shimo Yoshida to help our old friend Yasu and his family harvesting this years rice. Yasu invites friends from all over Japan every year to come and help with planting and harvesting. It is a great chance for many Japanese who have never had an opportunity to actually be involved in rice growing.

This is the first year Yasu used the machine to cut rice. It is a big time saver, but maintenance can be an adventure in itself. Yasu managed to un-jam the machine in a few minutes and keep cutting.

Lila's Birthday

Lila, our long time friend from Maui, was at the farm for a little birthday garden party. Lila used to live with her kids on a beach near Jake's tree house and the family organic fruit farm in Haiku. She now lives with her two children and two grandchildren near Yoyogi park and runs a kindergarden for the keikis. We had Champagne and fresh blueberries to celebrate her visit!

Uganda Project

Diane Reiner, a long time member of the Earth Embassy team, is in Uganda this month working with street children. Last year on her first trip to Africa, he met a young man Ronnie, a former street child of Kampala, who is now working with 30 homeless children to organize education, clothes, food and housing for them. Ronnie is organizing the kids into a music and comedy performance team, to give them skills and the means to support themselves.

We are hoping to support Diane and Ronnie with our network of permaculture development people in Africa.

Ringo, the guest permaculture expert who has been helping on the Mt Fuji farm, is also going to Uganda next year. He will be working with two groups, Children of Uganda and Permaculture Across Borders.

We are hoping to bring these various projects together and organize a small farm and guest house in the capital Kampala for Ronnie and his kids to use as a home base, education center and income source.

Diane's photos will be on display at RPI university this month and next.

contact info@earthembassy.org for more information on getting involved.

Rueben on TV again!!!

Our lovable TV star Rueben the sheep is on air again. This time he was invited by TBS to join a penguin, a tortoise, a rooster, a mini goat and a cute pink pig! We did two days of shooting at the studio in Yokohama. A series of tests to prove which animal is most devoted to its owner. Rueben wasnt able to pull Jake out of the hole, or save him from the faked heart attack, but he was the favortie of the camera crew, following around the staff and licking their knees all weekend.

On-air Sunday June 15th, TBS channel 6, 8pm.

Reuben is on TV (AGAIN!!!)

After 4 days of hard shooting, the TBS Doubutsu Kisotengai show is in the can and ready to air on Oct 21, Sunday at 8pm, Channel 6 (nationwide!). Rueben played his part of the loner sheep perfectly. HE loved knocking the TV stars around, Irie and Yabe from the Karate-Ka comedy team. Exactly on cue, he would smash them into the props and knock over the set. He wasnt so good at socializing with the other sheep. Everytime we had a shot where he was suppooosed to interact with them, he ran over to the TV crew and started licking the camera. He is too much of a ham and I think the stardom has gone to his fuzzy head. Also sad to say that he wasnt much of a hit with the ladies. They seemed interested but he is either too shy, or maybe doesnt realize he is a sheep. He kept following the cute assistant director around all day and licking her knees. But we are not giving up hope. Eva, our female sheep on the farm, was very glad to see him when he got home with his new haircut, and we are hoping they may be making baby sheep these coming cold nights. Remember to watch. Oct 21, 8pm. TBS.

TV Star Rueben

Rueben is back on TV again with Doubutsu Kisotengai.

Our old friend, Maeda the producer, was up to meet with Rueben and discuss the role. Rueben will playing the role of Rueben, a sheep who just cant get a girl. He will have to compete with other male sheep, and the two guys from Karate-ka comedy team, dressed up in giant sheep costumes(to boost Rueben's confidence1?!). Then Ruben will be introdcued to a number of girl sheep in a traditional Japanese "Omia" introduction party. Good luck with the Ladies Rueben! The show will air in October on TBS.

Kuniaki%20Chainsaw%20Art%20.gif

Shimizu Kuniaki, a very famous Japanese comedian, stopped by at our Eden Kids Festival to demonstrate his amazing chain saw carving for the kids. He took a big log and in about 15minutes a big smiling girzzly bear appeared! Shimizu went home pretty soon, he is busy building his own treehouse to live in nearby. But the Bear stayed! Come by to visit, and be sure to bring some berries for him.
